Noni, the term for that is "Parapraxis", but people usually call it a "Freudian Slip". I've written about it <a href="http://linguisticmystic.com/2007/06/06/paging-dr-freud-parapraxis-and-everyday-speech/" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

It may well have been a speech error or slip of the tongue, and that's just fine. My only objection is when people refuse to admit that that's what it was, and we get crazy explanations. Although they are linguistically awesome.

Hmmm...I see what you're saying, but sometimes people write/type what they're thinking in their minds. For example, if someone types "she's got quite an @ss" and later tries to say that they meant "she's got quite a past," I can see how that wouldn't fly grammatically b/c if they meant the latter, they would not have bothered to put the 'an.' However, it could very well be possible that they meant "she's got quite a past." I'm not sure of the correct term for this, but I've done it a few times. Typing a thought that's in my mind, but not really what I want to say. Kind of like a slip of the tongue? Ok...I'm rambling, so I'll stop now.

BTW...just found your blog today and I'm loving it! I'm starting a Linguistics program this May. So excited!

Quikboy, I'm very impressed that you took the time to come here and give an explanation, and I thank you for doing so constructively.

I hope you don't feel like I was accusing you of hating. Truthfully, I don't understand why you typed what you did, but it's all good. Vaio's aren't half bad computers, I agree. I'm partial to the Mac side, but that's because they work for me. Your mileage, as the cliché goes, may vary.

Thanks for replying, and for giving me an excuse to write a post!

Hey! I'm quikboy. Really, I am. I use that nickname all over the web. I use it on Yahoo Answers, QnA, Engadget, Gizmodo, Bzoink, tons of stuff. I like it. I think my opinions were valid. I told them it was just a mistake. I don't say I hate macs either or that they suck. I'm just saying that there are other computers out there that are also cool, like the Sony Vaio.
