In fact, the BBS on which it originated is very deeply enamored with anime and the Japanese "kawaii" complex; as an example you can see in Japanese media in particular the use of "-tan" as an honorific; which is meant to be a childish misspoken "chan", such as "onee-tan" as a child speaking to his or her older sister.
